Journal

Well, yes, we made it to the Murray River and the journey has begun. Following a Friday night fundraising/send-off BBQ on the banks of the lovely Yarra River in Melbourne (which was a huge success – raised about $1600!!), we departed for Albury on Saturday. Mixed with emotions of excitement and anxiety (feeling a little under prepared, untrained and inexperienced) – not sure what to anticipate but kind of enjoying being in this new space, we set off from the Hume Weir (near Albury) on the Sunday. I’m paddling with good friend, and now mentor/coach/instructor, Michael Ward. With thanks to the hospitality and care of Rowan and Julie we had quite a comfortable start. Rowen (who paddled this mighty river last year – read about their amazing journey at: http://www.murrayquest.com/) took us under his wing and joined us for the first leg, passing on invaluable knowledge of what was ahead (I guess sometimes its best not to know what you’re getting yourself into!!).

After paddling the 25 odd km’s to Albury, meeting with the local media (WIN news and The Boarder Mail), Michael and I set off on what we’d been waiting for – exploring the Murray River as it winds through such remarkable surrounds - every bend a new setting, and an ever evolving environment.

Over the duration of the week we covered about 230km of beautiful river country (averaging about 40km p/day). Each day bringing a new experience and often a moment I will never forget. Passing through towns Howlong and Corowa we made it to Yarrawonga by the weekend. The body is sore - it really doesn’t know what has hit it…… and what lies ahead!! Blisters are well formed by now and muscles I didn’t even know existed are experiencing stiffness and some pain. It’s been a hot week – most days around the 35degree mark. Awesome campsites have been aplenty.
